  • Canon 5D m iii record > 30 mins via HDMI?

Posted by Dan Coffey on October 11, 2013 at 2:16 am

    Hi there,

I have a Canon 5D mark iii with the recent 1.2.1 firmware. I have hooked it up to a Pix240i via HDMI cable. I’ve found that even though I disable auto shut off and turn off the 5D’s screen (output only to the pix), the camera still goes to sleep after 30 minutes. You have to push the movie button again to have it wake back up.

I’ve read that longer recording times are possible though I haven’t found any clear listing of what the settings need to be. Does anyone know if this is possible with the 5Diii and how?

    Many thanks!

    Dan

As long as you keep your 5DIII awake it will send its signal out HDMI, thereby allowing for longer than 30 minute record times. So every 25 minutes just make sure to press the record start/stop button to maintain the 5D’s awake status and continue to record via HDMI.

Ryan’s right, unfortunately this is built in limitation due to European markets. If it records over 30 minutes it’s a camcorder not a DSLR.

So lame! Do you know if any remote control is able to be used to keep it awake? This is a locked off shot and I’d hate to have someone sitting with it or walking up to it.

    Thanks!

They call these people “interns” or “production assistants”! 😀
