    Hello. I’m new to AE.
I’ve created text in Photoshop and when loading it into AE as a psd file I’m losing the blend mode options that the layer uses. In Photoshop the layer has a soft light mode applied to it which creates a semi transparency through which the layer beneath is seen. When I load the text file into AE the soft light effect is gone and I get a solid colour. Is this to be expected? Is it possible to use and keep the Photoshop modes when importing to AE?

Seems like quite a simple thing but it’s got me stumped. Any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

What version of AE are you using? AE7 should support the Soft Light transfer mode, but previous versions might not. It’s been a gradual process getting AE to translate Photoshop features into AE-native features, and in AE7 it’s a lot better but still far from perfect.

You can always load your Photoshop file as footage instead of as a comp or individual layers, and the blending mode will work as expected. You just won’t be able to extract the layer from the rest of the image.

Hello. Thanks for your reply. I’m using version 5.5. That may be the problem? I need to load just the text layer so I think I’m going to have to try something else.

Does the latest AE version have better (similar to PS) text creation tools? I got a really nice mist/shroud look to my text using the outer glow in PS but I just can’t reproduce it in AE.

    Cheers

I forgot to mention that the biggest problem was that the stroke effect was being dropped from the text, I have read since that AE 5.5 doesn’t reproduce that layer option.

Yes, AE 5.5 has pretty poor support of Photoshop layer styles. I think AE7 will support the stroke style, but I can’t remember. Your best bet is to download the AE7 demo and see how that works for you.

The newer versions of AE do have much better text tools than 5.x. As for layer styles, AE doesn’t do things the same way as Photoshop. Everything in AE are effects (which, being non-destructive in AE, are identical in functionality to Photoshop, it’s just a matter of mixing the right ones together).

Also, AE 7.0 takes text layers from p/shop and can edit the text from within AE, which is proper cool. I’ve been waiting for that having been on 5.5 until last week.
