Effect and 3d question
I am an after effects rookie just diving in and doing some complicated stuff on an effects heavy edit, but there are still some simple things that I didn’t get a chance to learn first. My first question is about making a 3d object. There is a part in my edit where I want my footage playing on a 3d TV. I made a box no problem, but I want the TV to have a small rounded back, and I don’t know how to do that. I figure the video itself can be the screen, but the back is the problem.
I also wanted to ask about the “shatter” effect. I can’t get it to actually show the shatter. Which control do I animate to do that? And also is it worth using, or is it kind of a cheezy effect?

After Effects doesn’t do true 3D. It can only do 2D planes in 3D space. (Commonly called “postcards in space”.) You can’t do curved objects.
There are plug-ins that do work in real 3D. You might be able to get away with a simple one, like CC Sphere, or you may want to try Conoa or Zaxwerks for more sophisticated options.
Of course, the real answer is to use a 3D rendering application to create your 3D shapes, then render them and import them into AE.
Regarding Shatter, it’s an extremely useful plug-in, often used for more than just shattering things. To see what you want, you probably need to change the View option in the effect properties. It defaults to wireframe to save memory.
