Corrupt Footage from Solid State Drive & Pix-Caddy
Dear All,
We just began production on a new feature doc. The DP using a Sony F3 as the primary camera. We just changed the media we are using. so now we are shooting directly to a 240GB Sandisk Solid State drive mounted directly to the camera with a PIX-CADDY-2 device. We are doing a lot of green screen sets, shooting 29.97 Pro Res HQ, etc. On the past few shoots, when transferring the media from the Solid State Drive to the field computer and field drives, certain clips will turn out corrupt. They will either not work at all, or they will play through but at certain (sometimes hard to find) parts within a 10/20min clip, the file will corrupt for a minute or so. My assumption is something is going wrong with the transfer, as the files seem to be fine on the SS drive. I have traded out the cables, exchanging them with new ones, with no success. Is there something I am missing here? Has anyone else run into this problem with this particular workflow? Please advise. Thanks very much for your time.

Hey Magee,
If the media is fine on the original, then it must be the media that you are transferring the files to. Normally it is down to speed and processing; A SSD is faster than most hard-disks and therefore would not hang up on the file. For purpose of investigation, try and transfer the files with problems to a fast raid and see if that clears up the problem?
Alternative could also be that your processor can’t deal with the end of one video file and the beginning of a new one. As in one source clip on your viewer, can easily be made up of multiple video files depending on the format. If two of those files doesn’t sync properly, then you’ll get a drop-out, or worse it will just freeze. One way of checking this is to render the file out to a new file format (“slow playback”) – if the rendered version is fine, then it is a question of the real-time playback not working.
Don’t know if they still do it, but there used to be a time where only Sony created software could read Sony created files. There has also on other (older) Sony systems been problems with Sony compression leading to High Definition digital artefacts – do watch out for this too.
A suggested work around is that you shoot shorter clips, if possible?

Hello,
There is a discussion on one of the CML mailing lists about this issue. Make sure the Pix is running the latest firmware and that the caddy and SSD are on the approved list. Some folks are apparently still having trouble but most are OK with the correct firmware and hardware. Pix is continuing to troubleshoot the issue.
