Hello there, currently i am attempting to make a horror film and this involves some gore effects. I want to make it look like my friend has a hole through him, i know you can do this by basic masking but it moves around is there anyway to do this and make it look pretty realistic, they did it in the movie shaun of the dead and it looks pretty sweet. HELP PLEASE!!!

One way would be to have him wear a bright, saturated (!) green t-shirt underneath a shirt that has the hole in it. Shoot the action locked off, then pull the talent out and shoot a clean plate.

Then you can key out the hole and replace it with the clean plate so you can see background through the hole.

That’s one way. Test first. Anybody else?

In “Death Becomes Her” They did a similar thing. They shot the actress in the environment, removed her, shot a clean plate. Then just create a circle like mask where you want the hole. Track that circle to follow along with the actor. Put the plate underneath the actor layer with the hole. So now you are seeing through them. However this doesn’t look right because there is no depth to the hole. In the movie they painted (or you can create in 3D) a bit of depth. So it looks like you see a bit of the actor’s innards. Then track this over the hole.

It’s the same as if you were standing next to a big pipe and looking down the middle of it. Because of perspective you will see the sides. So the trick to this effect isn’t the illusion of seeing through them, but the illusion of the hole with depth.
