I have a question regarding how After Effects renders previews.

I have always wanted to learn After Effects and decided to build a new computer for that task.

    The specs are:

AMD Athlon 4800+ Dual Core Processor
    Asus A8N-SLI Motherboard
    2 Gb Corsair XMS Ram
    MSI GeForce 7800GT Video Card

My question is whether After Effects uses the CPU for Ram Previews or the GPU on the Video Card. I have rendered some 3D Comps and the time it takes even with the fastest machine I could build is still staggering. My motherboard has the SLI option which allows the combination of two video cards to increase GPU horsepower.

But if After Effects does not use the GPU for Ram Preview there would not be much point in spending another $400.00 for the additional card.

I have looked through the documentation which came with the program and on the Adobe site but did not see anything directly addressing this issue. If anyone knows I would really appreciate the information.

If it uses the CPU then I will just get used to it but if it can be speeded up it would be a big help and worth the investment.

    Thanks

I am interested in what you mean by staggering. Daily, I build comps with anywhere from 30 to 100 layers with just about every effect that you can think of and I rarely have anything take very long to render. And let me tell you, my machine isn’t even close to half of what you have assembled. The problem may be something in your settings or what you are trying to do with it. Please explain what you are doing in more detail and I could help you out.

It did occur to me after reading your reply that staggering is somewhat of a relative term based on the impatience of the person using it. So that may have been a poor choice of words considering I would label waiting twenty minutes to get a table in a restaurant as

THis is definately not due to the processor. It shouldn’t even be anything to do with video memory since this is very basic in the terms of what AE can do. I would check your settings. Also, it sounds like this is an OpenGL type of render which works pretty well in after effects. Does your computer have an OpenGL video card?

Yes, it is an Open GL setup and it is enabled.
The card is the GeForce 7800GT

Also, all applicable drivers are loaded and working properly.

As far as other settings I have no idea what else to set.

I appreciate the feedback but I never found the anwser to the question if After Effects uses the CPU or the GPU for Ram Previews.
