Sounds like you mean “RAM previewing?” A RAM preview (hitting zero on your numeric keypad)will only preview based on available RAM resources. You can choose to preview a lower resolution as well as skipping frames. Look in your “Time Controls” window. This will allow for a longer preview.

Also make sure your “Work Area” bar is open to your whole 15 sec. comp.

    Good Luck.

It sounds like you’re running out of memory for RAM preview.

The most straightforward solution is to buy more RAM. But there are some settings you can tweak within AE to get more out of the RAM you have.

    * Reduce the preview resolution of your comp. (Full, Half, etc. at the bottom of the comp window.)
    * Make the comp window smaller. When you do this, change the resolution to match. (50% + Half, for example.)
    * Use a Region of Interest to only preview one section at a time.
    * Turn off layers and effects you don’t need to actively preview.
    * Turn off motion blur and frame blending for the comp.
    * In the Preferences > Memory and Cache, increase the max memory usage and image cache values. The max I’d recommend are 200% and 80%, respectively. Also, turning on the disk cache can help extend your RAM previews.
    * Purge the image cache occasionally so AE can rebuild it from scratch. (Edit > Purge)

Those are some of the basics of managing your memory for previewing. There are some other techniques, but I can’t remember them now.

    Thanx Tim,
Could U pls tell me how to do the following:

    * Use a Region of Interest to only preview one section at a time.
    * on the disk cache.

Another issue im facing is that when i try to render (0) “AE encounters a problem and needs to shut down”
I run a system with the following specs: P4 3Ghz (x2) with 2GB of RAM (could running out of memory for RAM preview actually be an issue?)

Always. AE is caching every frame to RAM. You don’t have unlimited memory, so you will run out eventually, depending on how big and how long your comp is.

Region of Interest: Click the Region of Interest button at the bottom of the comp window, then draw a box around just the part of the comp you’re interested in previewing. To hide the ROI, click the button again.

Disk cache: Edit > Preferences > Memory and Cache. I’m assuming you’re running AE 6.5. I don’t know if this feature is in earlier versions.

Don’t know what to tell you about the error and crash, other than to head over to Adobe’s support site and start searching the knowledgebase. Try searching on the error, or searching for the terms “troubleshooting” or “optimize”.
