Hello, I’m looking to do cell animations in AE with either Vector Paint or Paint. Is it possible to animate the strokes from vector paint as it has onion skinning, unlike paint? Also it seems that with paint you have to seperately animate each stroke which is crazy for more complex animations. It also doesn’t seem to smooth the strokes.

    Thanks,
    Yussef

    Right tool for Right Job

AE is great in many ways, but what you are talking about here is more easily tackled with other tools. Such as Mirage 1.5 (bauhaussoftware.com) and ToonBoomStudio (ToonBoom.com). There are others as well that are dedicated to this type of animation.

Because this kind of workflow in those apps are what they do best… I’ve not attempted to force AE to accomplish this task in AE. Different apps and tools have different strengths.

You might consider Painter (which has had animation capabilities for years) or even painting the individual cells as layers in Photoshop and then animating in AE.
