50mm – Minolta Rokkor/1.2 vs canon L USM/1.2 vs zeiss Planar T*/1.4
Hey guys. I’m using a Canon 550D for video and want a nice glass. The sensor has a 1.6x crop factor.
These have all been highly recommended and I can’t settle on one! Have you used or heard anything about these lenses in regards to video?

I think the Canon 50mm will serve you well (not familiar at all with the others) however as you point out that 50mm is going to act like an 80mm. I shoot mostly with a 50mm on a T2i too and I often wish I had something more like a 35mm or 24mm prime instead since I often find myself just too close to my subjects (the easy solution is to start walking backwards but that’s not always exactly possible)
Still the Canon 50 is sweet, enjoy!

The Canon 50mm is a great lens. I could never justify the price and ended up getting the EF USM 1.4 non L version. It works great and the .2 stop difference wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I use it on a 5D Mark iii.

First up I think the 1.2 thing is over kill. When shooting video you want find the lens’ sweet spot. The canon 1.8 50mm is a great lens and you should be finding the sweet spot at around 5.6 on the aperture. Don’t get fooled into thinking that because the lens is faster it’s a superior lens. Also check out the Rokinon lenses, maybe a little plastic like but a very nice image.
