Workflow for DSLR editing
With NLEs like premiere cs6 that can edit native h.264 files, is there still any need to transcode files captured with any of the canon dslr to ProRes or anyother codec before editing?

If you can edit natively there’s no real need for transcoding IMHO. Since CS5 I don’t transcode anymore and had no problems.

Agree.
If you’re color grading + have the time + space, then go for it, but from my tests I only saw a minimal difference. Nothing that one of my clients would notice.

If you want to get heavily into colour grading I’d suggest something like the GoPro Cineform that’s a robust codec that improves colour space. We convert our green screen footage to this codec and it makes a massive difference in pulling an excellent key. If you’re just doing normal editing with a bit of grading then leave as is.
