Cinestyle vs. Marvel
Hello,
I’m having a difficult time wondering what picture style is better: Marvel or Cinestyle
(The first set of images were converted to proress, the second set were edited natively in H.264)Here’s some tests I did today (video stills),

I also did a test between Standard b+w and Cinestyle b+w, both images are cropped (disregard sharpness; standard had +2, Cinestyle had 0)

I’m pretty confused as to which picture style I should use for my projects!What looks better to you guys?

There can be no wrong or right answer as to what preset to use “generally”. It’s all in the realm of your preferences and artistic choices.

I personally like the Technicolor style more, since I have the impression, that with the even flatter Technicolor style I have more possibilities in post… But that might be very subjective.
I’m with you, Marco, I also think, that with the Technicolor style, more artifacts are visible than with the Marvel style, but that might be because shadows are lifted a little bit more and the dark parts of the picture are, where the artifacts mostly occur…
What I like about the Marvel style is that in some cases it can be used even without (or with just a little bit of) grading while the Technicolor style is almost unusable without severe postproduction.
Used the Marvel style quite a time before the Technicolor style came out and I find it (apart from the Technicolor which I use now) the most usable of the flat styles.
You surely know that, but using ISOs with a multiple of 160 (160, 320, 480, 640,…) will give you clips with very low noise. I was stunned to see how clean my videos with ISO 640 and the Technicolor style where…

What a great thread!
I’m wondering how everyone feels about Canon’s own new flatter “Video Camera X Series Look” color profile in comparison to Marvel and Technicolor?
I’ve been using the Technicolor profile a lot for the widest dynamic range but find that it needs too much color correction for a lot of what I’m shooting. I do some news and sports shooting for a college news program. They don’t need cinematic footage but they do need it fast. There’s rarely time for color grading. I’m hoping that Marvel (or maybe Canon’s new VCx Series) profile will produce footage of a high quality that is ready or nearly ready to roll right off of the card.
