  • Nikkor glass on cropped 7D sensor

    I am not sure why I have been unable to figure this out, but I have searched around a lot and haven’t got what I am looking for. So I turn to you good folks on the COW.

    I have a Canon 7D, so it has the 1.6x cropped sensor. I also recently got a great Nikon Nikkor 50mm Ai lens off ebay. I assumed the lens would be closer to 80mm because of the crop factor on the 7D’s sensor. But I don’t think this is the case. I compared it to my Canon EF-S (so the lens is made for crop sensor) 17-55mm. And the Nikon 50mm looks pretty close to the Canon at 55mm. Pictures below.

    It looks like the Nikon is true 50mm. Right? What am I not understanding about this?

    The 50mm Nikor looks very close the the 55 canon lens but looks to be a bit wider (since it is 5mm smaller). But because you are using a crop sensor that 50 would really be around an 80/85. If you put that on a 5d it would be much wider. It shouldn’t matter what brand of lens you are using because a 50mm on a Nikor is a 50mm in general.
    Try throwing a 35mm lens onto your crop sensor camera to give you an idea what your 50mm would look like on a fullframe camera

    Yeah the EF-S 50mm still gets cropped as a regular lens would. Can’t change the physics…

    That is why I am confused. It looks likes it is only 5mm wider, when I would think it would tighter (like the 80/85mm you mentioned).

    So then I can come to 2 conclusions, neither which make sense to me.
    1) My Canon EF-S 17-55 is not true 17-55. But the B & H info states clearly it is not for full frame sensors, it is made for APS-C sensors

    2) For some reason the Nikon 50mm is closer to actual 50mm than the 80mm it should be on the cropped sensor, but I have not idea why.

    The bigger lens are wider glass, but the cropped sensor is similar to being zoomed in a bit.

    You can have a piece of glass 3 inches wide and look through a 2 inch hole, you only see 2 inches of the glass. You can then get a 4 inch piece of glass and look through the 2 inch hole, it looks the same even though the glass is bigger. This ends our lesson for today class : )

    Basically what ‘Professor Dunn’ is saying is that your 17-55mm lens, that is made specifically for an APS-C sensor, is going to give you the same framing on your APS-C body as 17-55mm lens that is made for a full sensor camera.

    a 50mm lens is a 50mm lens. Some are less wide inside and can’t be used on a full-frame camera (well,, you can for interesting boarder effect..)
    The difference is that the APS-C lens uses smaller diameter glass.

    The mentality behind this is that the APS-C lenses cost less to build, and thus cost less to the consumer…

    In the end I always go for the full frame lens’ to future proof new bodies down the road.
