I’ve recently had a mysterious “D+” indicator appear near the lower right corner of the top LDC panel on my 7D. Obviously I must have been rummaging through menus and hit something which brought this on. At first I feared the camera might be grading the quality of my work – a design feature I thought was surely years away and chilling in a “2001” kind of way. But I’ve since discovered I’m unable to set the ISO below 200 before it kicks into “A” mode so I suspect this has something to do with that. Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

Look up “Highlight Tone Priority” in the user manual, page 209.

It’s sometimes useful, and I usually shoot with it on. Some of the color data in the rescued highlights is pretty useless, but if I roll it off in Color, I think it can produce a better image sometimes.
