Proxies naming
What is it that decides CATDV knows to link a proxy to a high rez media file? And what decides whether it’s tape based or file based?
We have xdcam files and want to make proxies. The proxy you get when using Build proxy is a file with a long number number and that’s in a folder which has the tape name/file name in it. The files do link as proxies though.
When we build proxies for file based media the proxy is the same name as the original file.
And why is XDCAm considered a tape format anyway!

XD, I can’t answer why it’s considered tape other than it helps old school users manage their fear of the future. 😉
Path based proxies are just that, files named the same as the file, in an equivalent path. Just like in an offline/online workflow in FCP.
Tape based proxies are a feature left over from tape workflows that use an ID to track proxy files. Generally it’s recommended that you use path-based in almost all cases these days.
Also, on a side note, we normally recommend that shops that shoot XDCAM copy the media to hard disk and treat it as file-based. (This is far beyond the scope of a thread here, get some help from your dealer.) But the financial payoffs on media alone make it a great workflow.

Thanks for this.. These are XDCAM files not shot on a camera but generated in Avid. We made the proxies in the worker and it thinks they are files however in catdv itself it thinks they are tapes, so the proxies we created in the worker don’t link in catdv. How can we modify the clips in the catalogue to make them not tape based?
What is the actual thing that decides it’s a tape or file from a catdv point of view…

I’m not sure what you mean by “decides”. If there’s a Tape ID, CatDV assumes, (correctly I might add) that it came from tape.
Note that you can and IMHO should, use path based proxy for all assets, even those that came from tape.
