random preview build failure
Posted by Carsten Orlt on March 17, 2010 at 9:49 pmI’m trying to build my preview files but have some trouble.
I modified the settings to H264, 672Kb, fast encode, AAC 44 khz stereo audio.
My preview directory is a shared NAS storage from Maxtor.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. When it doesn’t I get the error message: (java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException)
Cheers

March 19, 2010 at 9:50 pmCan you see any coincidence as far as the format of the original file?
The factory guys will have to address the error specifically, but I know that sometimes certain original media codecs give me trouble in catalogs with mixed media types.
Keep track of what fails. Also, try making a few locally to make sure it’s not network related first.
good luck!

March 20, 2010 at 11:52 pmThanks Bryson.
Can’t see coincidence as I have only one type. ProRes (standard).
I did try building locally to make sure it’s not the network but same random problem.
What kind of works 80% of the time is to make one preview at a time and quit and restart CatDV and then do the next.Hope the factory guys have some ideas 🙂

March 22, 2010 at 10:07 pmWe’ve had very occasional reports of this problem. From the log files we’ve seen it looks like an intermittent bug in QuickTime (it probably depends on some random factor like where in memory a particular buffer is placed). The best advice therefore is to try the command again if you get that error, and maybe to quit and restart CatDV if it still occurs.
Sorry we don’t have a more definitive answer at this time.

Naturally not the answer I was hoping for but thank you for being honest!

March 24, 2010 at 5:46 pmRolf’s advice is pretty much what’s worked for me. QuickTime is a bloated beast that has many strange oddities – it’s been continuously built upon since 1994. Here’s hoping QT X cleans that up eventually…

March 25, 2010 at 5:41 pmI’m seeing this too now on a clip that’s 23.98 Pro res 422 HQ.
Trying to find a point of coincidence, but QT X will export it. This one’s on OSX server 10.6 but even machines on 10.5.8 can’t do it. Weird.

April 1, 2010 at 4:35 pmOk, chalk one up for Rolf. 😉
My proxy problem was one of patience. We weren’t waiting long enough on the proxy to complete.
The progress bar in Java seems a bit random, so for us, we just waited a bit, at Rolf’s suggestion, and sure enough, it completed. Again, we weren’t seeing an error.
Patience is a virtue after all. 😉

April 8, 2010 at 8:03 amHappened to me again today.
Was wondering: I get always the import notice that my clips (after being captured in FCP) have duration discrepancies = video media exceeds movie duration.
Also: Had a clip yesterday where I wanted to add a TC track (got this as an offline file on DVD-Ram) and got the same (java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException) message?
Just some observations – no idea if they are relevant?

June 15, 2011 at 7:40 pmThank you, Carsten for this information. I am new to CatDV, and I have noticed that I am getting import warnings for most of the clips that I import. When I check the import notes, it says that the video media exceeds the movie duration. I am planning to do some more tests, but I believe most of the clips have been captured through Final Cut. Hopefully, we will get a solution for future captured clips in Final Cut.

June 15, 2011 at 11:09 pmId say that Import Warnings are mainly to be ignored unless you have problems that need troubleshooting.
I seldom (almost never) have an import that doesn’t throw up a “warning”, yet seldom have problems with the media. Note that they say “minor” most of the time.
The app is a bit “melodramatic” in my opinion. 😉
