Imported .PNG’s look like crap when placed in timeline
I’ve finally started work on another greenscreen comedy. This is the first one I’m doing in Resolve, all the previous ones were done in Premiere Pro. When I import an image, jpg, png, whatever it looks fine, but when I place it into the timeline it gets all oversaturated and weird looking. You’ll an example of what I’m talking about below. What am I doing wrong? Is there a specific way of doing this that I’m missing? All I’m doing is dragging the image to a pre-existing timeline set to 3840 x 2160. Also, I’m slightly tweaking the image in photoshop to conform to those specs. Here is the original and the way it looks once in the timeline:

In Photoshop what color profile are you exporting? From memory it should be sRGB.

Color profile and bit depth of the file? Color management settings in Resolve? Does the existing timeline have any timeline corrections in it?

To be honest I’ve never paid attention to color profiles or bit depth because I never had any problem before. I would just grab “backgrounds” for my green screen videos and never had a problem.
I did, however, come up with a solution of sorts which might help you guys understand what was wrong. I created a new timeline from scratch and set it to 1920×1080 instead of my usual starting point of 4K UHD, then imported the images. They looked as they should, and when I changed the timeline resolution to 3840x 2160 they still looked the way they should.
With that information I’m sure you guys can figure out what I was doing wrong, for future reference. Thanks.

My guess is your default 4k timeline was not set to Rec 709. I suggest you check the color space settings on your default timeline. But you also need to go to Photoshop and see what settings you have for the image outputs as well for the future so there is not a mismatch that your workaround may have temporarily fixed for rec 709 only.

After previous successful uses of images I do believe I changed my timeline from Rec 709 to V Log L because that’s the video footage I was using. Good call, Michael. Cheers!

You can use the color management tools. You’ll just need to make sure that every piece of footage/images/graphics that isn’t in your input color space is either bypassed or given the right color space so they won’t be converted in the wrong way.
