Upgrading GPU in 2009 MacPro 4,1
Hi All, I’ve tried searching the forums but didn’t find an answer to my question: Will an EVGA Nvidia GTX 980 Ti work in my 2009 MacPro 4,1? I’ve heard that by downloading the latest Nvidia drivers for Mac OS, that there isn’t any problems with the GPU being recognized despite being a PC card.
Is anyone else doing this with their Cheese Grater towers? I simply can’t afford a whole new iMac 5k + Thunderbolt at this point. I’m also using Yosemite since everything I have works: DaVinci Resolve, Adobe CC 2017, ProTools, etc.

have you checked the power requirements, and what you have available? That was usually the first issue when trying to put a newer card in those boxes.

The other issue is that the 4,1 may not support a newer nVidia card at all; its a BIOS problem, and you will have to try to run a newer OS, Mountain Lion was the first to start supporting non-EFI nVidia cards and then the support is ambiguous as far as number of cards supported and so on. In any event you will have joined the rest of us fighting the constant battle with Apple over Web Drivers and version compatibility. Its a nightmare.

He sells cards with hacked EFI that behave like genuine Mac compatible cards, but its not absolutely necessary to use a card with EFI. Just giving you an idea of what will work in your Mac and what the issues might be. I have nothing to do with the guy and never purchased a hacked card from him.

I purchased from MacVidCards in the past, and recommended him to countless students and colleagues.
I think his work is wonderful, in I believe he is the only one in the world making/selling fleshed video cards for Mac .I did notice a few days ago (when setting to buy a flashed Titan 12 GB) that most of his store seems sold out.
Should maybe check again after holiday chaos is over in coming weeksWorking with a non flashed card is apparently possible (I’d only pick models that the guys at MacVidCards offer, or at least check in apple/macrumors/reddit forums before buying) but it will not run an apple boot screen.
it a 4-5 step process to install driver then card.I read a good tip somewhere, to keep an EFI card (GT120… or such) at hand in case some upgrade messes with Nvidia driver and Mac doesn’t boot.
