  • Problems scrubbing lo-res video?

Posted by Derek Forreal on May 12, 2013 at 4:59 pm

I have captured some old VHS video and would like to do some basic edits in Resolve.

I have no problem scrubbing and editing HD files from a 5Dii (so system should be more than capable?), but the lo-res files (768 x 574 x 25fps) that I captured are really slowing down Resolve.

I’ve tried a number of different conversions but not having any luck. BTW, I’m new to new to editing so go slow…

So far I’ve captured the video to uncompressed .avi using VirtualDub and then converted to mov/mp4 (tried using Handbrake and VLC player) and other formats using H264 codec.

    any pointers?

Pick a format that does not spread the compression over a large number of frames, like H.264 does.

Try ProRes or DNxHD. If your disk is fast enough, dpx.

Sorry for the late reply but I’ve only just realised that my page wasn’t set to show replies :S (strange option – why would anyone want it?)

Anyway, thanks for the pointer and apologies for the noob question, but how do I go from .avi to either of the suggested formats?

BTW, I’m on Windows 7 – are those codecs compatible?
