Building a 4k system…
I’m looking to spec out a 4k Resolve system and looking for some suggestions. Any help is much appreciated:
1. We would prefer the ability to use NLE apps such as Premiere and Symphony on this system. Maybe even FCP7. So we would prefer Mac or Win systems over Linux if possible.
2. Can a Mac Pro push 4k? The Config guide says it’s possible, but hardware dependent. Anyone with hands-on experience?
3. Our main codecs will be ARRIRAW, R3D, and possibly Sony F65. Even though ARRIRAW is not technically 4k, we’re looking to finish in 4k DPX
4. Does 4k R3D require 2 Rockets?
5. What’s the preferred storage? Would an ATTO R680 connected to an 8bay SAS RAID6 setup be fast enough for 4k DPX? Do we have to push to 16 drives or fibre?
6. We would like to do local fast storage, but also add a 10GbE card for connection to the SAN
7. Are there other apps we should look into for this system, outside of Resolve? For others working in 4k, what other apps do you use for your online?

Oh, and Phantom. Since Resolve can’t currently work with Phantom .cine files, we’ll probably bring them in DPX

I just did a commercial with phantom .cine in resolve
I built a 16 drive sas (2 x 8 bay on a hpt rr 2744 and was barely able to do quad hd dpx 10 bit)
I have a decklink 4 k but have not yet fed it to a 4 k display (nab might change that)I don’t see why I couldn’t play back 4k r3d on my Mac through it though
Dual redrocket should get you 5k r3d

with the storage, are you running the 8 drive arrays as RAID50 or something similar? how much bandwidth did you have or need for Quad HD DPX? I’ve seen other posts from Juan saying he uses a 16 bay FC chassis. i’m hoping he’ll chime in here.

No that was scraping by at raid 0, but there were a couple issues so I probably could have done a little better. Not my usual config. Yeah I would think you’d want a big fiber setup for sure. 4k dpx is no small feat

For quadHD DPX you need ca 700Mbyte/sec. With very fast disks and best controller it is perhaps doable with 8 disks in Raid 5. Our Sonnet Dx800 with 8x2TB* does just that when empty, but borderline. For sustained performance in 4k you need specs better by 20-30%. Two Sonnets in raid5 we tested doing ca 1300Mbyte/sec.
*Atto express SAS r680 controller, Seagate enterprise 2TB disks sata/600, 7200rpm, 64MB

so to get 1300MB/s, i would have to put one 8Bay enclosure on each of the R680’s ports, and stripe them across as a RAID50? or are you suggesting a RAID0 for all 16 drives across the 2 ports?

This is a weird one. Somehow the cow posted my post as if it was Eric’s post.
(Come to think of it Eric and I have never been seen in the same room at the same time)I wrote the following not Eric:
The problem on the Mac is bus bandwidth. Doing 4k io means double the bandwidth both ways. Enabling the optimize for sdi option could barely squeak out 4k with a 3xsomething beefy Cubix. I wouldn’t recommended it.I also wouldn’t recommend trying to run heavy editorial and color on the same machine.
You’re talking about a box doing color work in 4k in real time. That’s pretty nuts, it’s at the edge of what’s possible with like a z820. There is a reason why shops doing 4K di’s overwhelmingly use Linux boxes.
