Resolve Lite crashes every time
Posted by Christian Simpson on January 22, 2012 at 5:42 amI’m running Resolve Lite 8.1 and it has worked perfectly well for some time but yesterday the program began crashing repeatedly. I could not figure out why at first but then I realized that by scrubbing thru the thumbnails (located above the timeline) in the COLOR panel Resolve will crash every single time. I was able to repeat this event 6 times in a row. The weird thing is I can actually grade just fine. Nothing else I do crashes the program, its just when I move down the timeline or scrub right to bring up additional thumbnails. I then upgraded to 8.2 in a desperate attempt to find a solution and the exact same bug reared it’s ugly face again. Has anyone else had this issue or know a workaround?

January 24, 2012 at 2:10 amHi, you need to provide some more detail before anyone can offer guidance. OS, system config, project resolution, file type and size etc. etc. We have no other reports of this issue so if you offer some more detail someone might be able to guide you.

January 24, 2012 at 2:29 amSorry about that.
2009 Mac Pro, OSX Lion, 24 GB Ram, working off a 6 TB RAID 0 i created with three internal WD black caviar drives. I have a quadro 4000 for mac gpu. Being Davinci Lite I am working with a 1080p timeline and working with mostly 2k RED over cranked footage. I have very few 4k shots mixed in. Another one of my projects has dslr 1080p footage and the crash happens there as well.
I just now attempted to repeat the crash and it crashed 3 times with out fail within seconds repeating the process I mentioned earlier.

January 25, 2012 at 1:09 amHi, what GPU card are you using for UI?
If you run the BMD disk speed test what results do you get?
With one clip in the media pool, say a r3d, with 1/2 res good setting in the config, source tab, in the browse window can you scrub the clip ok? Now try in color page.As I mentioned, we don’t have this issue reported elsewhere and it seems fine on my iMac which has a lot less power than a MacPro.

January 25, 2012 at 5:43 amI have the stock gpu card that came with my mac pro. It’s a ATI Radeon HD 2600 and I have a 24″ HP monitor hooked up to it. When I run the BM speed test I get 282 MB/s write and 285 MB/s read speed. Scrubbing clips in the color tab and the source is no problem. Don’t get me wrong I do not get real time playback without sending to the render cache but I can scrub just fine. Does Davinci automatically use the most powerful GPU? I should also note that I have the Quadro 4000 in slot 1 and the Radeon card in slot 2. Don’t know if that matters or not.
This is what is so weird. I can work in the color tab all day long without any problems. Performs flawlessly. Its only when I try and scroll thru thumbnails above the timeline that it crashes without fail. It makes it impossible for me to advance to further clips to work.

January 25, 2012 at 6:56 amCan you please grab logs when you get the crash, and send it to davincihelp (at) blackmagic-design.com?

No, Resolve doesn’t “automatically” use the most powerful GPU.
Read the configuration guide.Your ATI 2600 is not approved. In any event, any ATI card (nominally the 5770) should be used for the GUI in slot one and the CUDA/nVidia card (whihc will be used for color processing) should be in slot 2, and should NOT be connected to a monitor.

March 16, 2012 at 12:17 pmHey I had this problem and here’s what I discovered:
I was editing in Premiere Pro raw R3D files shot on EPIC RED with Anamorphic lenses then exporting an XML for Davinci Resolve Lite.
When I imported the xml some clips came up offline or jumbled in the timeline. Davinci was crashing evert time I put the playhead over them.I went back into Premiere Pro and found in my edit I had used files that came from the red that appear to be doubles of some of the takes only difference was the smaller file size. For example I got files called “A004_C008_0215V0_001.R3D” and “A004_C008_0215V0_002.R3D” in the same folder.
In Premiere Pro I replaced the “_002.R3D” ones with the larger “_001.R3D” ones and this solved the Resolve issues. I think Premiere Pro can handle it but Resolve maybe can’t or skips them thinking they are doubles then pulls other clips at random because I got heeeeeeaaaps of weird shit where it wasn’t supposed to be in my edit.
Dunno if this helps you but may hel someone else shooting on Epic..
