  • Upgraded Mac OS and suddenly performance dropped in DaVinci

Posted by Sascha Engel on May 2, 2016 at 9:00 am

    Hi Everybody,

A weird thing happened to me.
Till recently I worked on my Hackintosh with a MAC OSX 10.8.4 system with DaVinci 10.
Now I upgraded the HacMac to 10.10.5 and I am running the DaVinci Studio 12.

After extensive tests, also with the great Benchmark Test of Sascha Harber, I realised,
that on my upgraded system I get 10-15% lower performance in playback and rendering than on my old system.

    How come?
Is 10.10.5 operating slower with DaVinci?

Happy to hear your thoughts about this issue.

    Greetings,

    Sascha

    hi sascha!

to me this sound more like a performance drop because of the resolve upgrading. do you
have the recommended drivers installed? did you try resolve 10 on your new osx? or 11?
or even 12.5, it’s kinda unstable (but workable) and they say they worked on performance issues.

oh, and theres the max cuda cards thing. how many cards does your system have? do you
see all of them in your osx?

    JI Andy,

    Thanx for the fast reply.
All my drivers are updated. Including the NVIDIA Webdriver.
No I tried only 12 Studio so far, which is the App Store Studio version,
but it should be no problem.
12.5 Update is only coming into the App Store in a month or two.
I have one Card right now GTX-680 2GB

I could install 11 Lite and check wether the performance issue is the same on the 10.10.5 system.

    Greetings,

    Sascha

    hi sascha,

in the long run to be honest you need to upgrade your graphic card. 2gb ram
is becoming less and less attractive due to the denoise-features of davinci.

a used nvidia titan for example you can get for about 400€ -> and then you have
6GB ram and much more realtime in resolve.

Well, trust me, I soooo know that.
Contemplating right now, wether I should go for the 980 ti superclocked or immediately for the TITAN X.

But regardless of my GPU situation (which btw still does a pretty good job compared to its minimal size),
the fact that it runs slower on an upgraded system, than on the previous one, with same hardware,
does not make much sense to me.

    Greetings,

    Sascha

Did you do a clean install of the OS? Did you also try to download Davinci from Blackmagic and not the app store. I had read somewhere there are differences– I’m not talking lite vs studio.

My OS is pretty new installed, yes.
The difference between DaVinci App Store and the Dongle Studio is,
that the Web Store App runs only in Open CL and no option for CUDA.
So, when I did the test, of course, I switched my DaVinci Lite 10 on the old OS 10.8.4 as well to Open CL.

    Ok, Update:

So, apparently it was not connected to the combination of Yosemite and DaVinci 12:
After Having several Tech Programs run over my system and upgrading to latest Blackmagic Driver 10.6.5,
I suddenly get a way faster reading than even on my old 10.8.4 system.

    Problem solved.

hi Sascha, do you mind provide what hardware you are using for your hackintosh? is davinci working real time?
