Grading Epic Monochrome
Posted by Thibaut Petillon on January 15, 2013 at 9:44 amHi,
We got a project shot on Epic Monochrome and I was wondering if someone knows when the Blackmagic team will add support for the files coming out of this camera.
In the meantime we are transcoding it all for editing purpose using latest version of REDCineX.
By the way, thank you guys at Blackmagic for Resolve V9, it’s working great.

January 15, 2013 at 11:49 amI’m sure.
I know support has to be add but I don’t just know when. For the moment, Resolve sees the structure of the RED folders but doesn’t see the content in it. RedCineX build 16 is able to see it though.
I’m running Resolve 9 on 10.6.8.

January 15, 2013 at 1:59 pmI would prefer avoid that workflow, as I really want to start grading from the RAW. The director will soon begin to edit the film, so I’ll grade the film in one or 2 months. I hope Blackmagic will add support for those files in the meantime.
Blackmagic guys, any ideas ?

January 15, 2013 at 2:45 pmHey Thibaut,
I’m afraid it doesn’t work and won’t until Red give BMD the SDK and they have time to implement it. I sent them a sample file from our first monochrome job and I’m sure they’ll do their best to implement it ASAP.
I’d recommend wrangling to 2.5k DPX files with handles for your job, its what we did.

January 15, 2013 at 4:15 pmThat’s what I’ll end up doing if the tech guys at Blackmagic don’t have time to implement it before I start grading. What did you think of the footages from that camera Dan ?

January 16, 2013 at 6:01 pmWhen do you start on this spot? As of right now there is no acceleration available for Epic-Monochrome footage, even in Redcine-X, it’s all done in CPU. So I think the intermediary workflow is the only viable one.
I’ve found the monochrome stuff to be really sharp and clean… sharp enough to where it doesn’t need any additional sharpening and i’ve had to do some misting to soften it up a bit.
On the mac I’ve had great success using prores 4444 for 2.5k intermediaries.
