  Color grading in P3

  I keep hearing that it’s so much better to color grade in P3 color space since that’s what will end up on DCP format, but I’m really confused on how to achieve it. I can turn P3 color space on my Flanders, and get the grade I like, but then if I go to tape I’m going Rec709 and the color will be different, no matter how I set my monitor, so the DCP and the SR will be different. Is there a P3 to Rec709 lut anywhere, or what is the recommended workflow for this instance?

  Hi Gustavo,

  Here’s a thread that a read from reduser about working interchangeably in rec.709 and p3, but what you have surmised is correct – if you monitor and grade in p3 you will have to do a transform to get the picture into rec. 709 for tape (and don’t forget that you may have created colors that can’t be displayed by rec.709 displays, so you have to deal with that):
