16mm Telecine look in AE
This is mainly a hypothetical question/plan of action, some pieces of the technology aren’t at my disposal yet, but given where its is going, I can easily imagine doing this for real in the near future:
I’m looking to replicate the look of a 1970s/1980s 16mm telecine transfer of a 35mm motion picture, much like the VHS releases or local analog TV broadcasts of a Godzilla movie during that same time period. My main tools are a hacked Nikon D5100 capable of shooting RAW video, ImpulZ LUTs, and FilmConvert.
The chief plan of action is to convert my raw files to a watchable video format with all the appropriate adjustments to color temperature, exposure, vibrance, saturation, et. al. done in ACR in AE to mimic the look of 16mm in its basic form.
Next, I color grade my main footage with ImpulZ via the Cineon conversion process, pre-comp my work, and duplicate it into Cyan, Magenta and Yellow components. From there, I mess around with Curves as well as Hue & Saturation to get the appropriate look. Finally, I export the footage into Premiere where I work with FilmConvert to apply a finishing touch of grain.
Would you guys consider this an effective plan to replicate the telecine look via digital means? If not, can any of you please offer an effective alternative?
