  • RED R3d Question…..

Posted by Eric Johnson on November 14, 2011 at 5:50 pm

I’ve been meaning to ask for a bit, but whenever I change any of the RED codec settings, either in Project settings or on a clip in the timeline, there is no change to the image.

If I change the exposure, nothing. Color temp, the same. The only RED related change that I can make and get a change in the image is if I apply the RED input transform in LUTs, which results in a super overexposed yellow shot. I can pull most everything down from that, but it’s still an underwhelming change…

    Thoughts?

    DaVinci 8.1 on 2.66 12 core. 5770 and Quadra 4000.

Are you using DaVinci RGB or ACES color space?

I was using ACES… But I just switched to YRGB and it seems to have “fixed” it….

Is that the fix? Do you not get access to the RED metadata in ACES? And do you know why the input transform for the RED treats it so crazy?

Also, maybe I’m missing something because the ACES color science seems to work better on the preconforms I’ve been doing, but in the RED stuff I seems to have more to work with in the YRGB…. So like I said, maybe I’m missing something that I would rather not be missing….

    Further enlightenment would be awesome.

Correct me if i’m wrong but I was under the impression that the whole idea of using Aces workflow was to try and get all the different camera formats into a common color space with a similar look and feel based on the Input transforms then making sure that when you select your output transform you don’t lose anything in the process. This whole idea was a way to have a consistency that wasn’t available up till now.
it does a good job so far for those apps that support the workflow when handing off stuff back and forth with other apps that are ACES aware.
