  1080p Project/Session, 2K Output – RED MX feature

  Hi all,

  I’m just about to embark on a RED MX feature grade in DaVinci. Since my monitoring is limited to 1080p (Sony OLED), I was wondering if it’s worth setting the timeline to 1080p and then just switching to 2K (our deliverable spec) at the end for output. How does that work? The hardware will be as follows;

  2010 Mac Pro 8 core
  Cubix Xpander Desktop 4 with 3x Mac Nvidia GTX 285
  1x RedRocket
  700MB/s RAID 5 array (vie PCIe card)

  Will this boost performance at all (1080p over 2K/Half res MX)? Will windows translate ok? What are the potential pitfalls?

  Of course I will do my own tests beforehand but it’s good to know if I should even bother!

  Hi Toby, set the red decode to half res good, 10 bit, the timeline to HD and grade in real time. When you want to render, change the r3d decoder settings to as you would prefer, set the render page res to 2K.
  All the windows and resizing and grades will translate correctly to the new render side.

  hi peter ,
  you mentioned 10 bit right ?
  Red MX is 12 bit … can i ask why technically 10 bit in Resolve is enough ?
  why there is no 12 bit ?

  i have just opened a thread to talk about this …on epic footage at 10 or 16 bit i can’t find any differences (even on the qualifier …)

  if you could give us the tech explanation would be great !

  Hey Dude,

  Resolve actually processes at 32 bit internally. The 10 bit Peter is referring to is the video output bit depth and as far as I know most monitors have 8 or 10 bit panels so it’s best option.

  mmm …i think he was referring to the R3D decoder …

  so i can i ask again about the differences between 16Bit and 10 Bit on the Red tab for epic Footage …. technically 16 should be the same both depth of the epic R3D but i really cannot find any differences in resolve to justify to use 16 (that does not play realtime even with 2 rockets …)

  as i said even the keyer produce the same results ….

  Good point there specially with internal processing in mind.

  And yes 16 bit will bog down mac pro.

  In response to your original question Toby, yeah working at 1080 is great for your output monitors, and then swtiching back to 2K for final deliverable output works just fine (all power windows and resizing are adjusted automatically). I’ve done this on a couple of features and have had perfect results.
