Feature Requests
After using resolve for a month I’d like to voice my feature requests. Most of these are simple things that would increase productivity and organization. Tell me what you think.
1. Ability to name nodes. Just like being able to name stills it would be nice to sometimes name nodes so that their function is easy to identify. For instance one node can be labeled “contrast,” another, “face correction,” and so on.
2. Ability to add markers and notes to the timeline. Just like markers in AVID and FCP, it would help in identifying a shot you need to come back to or a client’s specific note about a shot.
3. Hot key for “display node graph” command. I find myself using this feature all the time and right-clicking and sorting through menu options is a waste of time. It would be great if you could just click on a shot or still and hit a hot-key to display the node graph.
4. Ability to move the node graph window. Seems trivial, but the node graph gets in the way of everything else forcing you to close it and re-open it just to see the timeline or see what adjustments you’re making.
5. Ability to lasso nodes or “command + click” multiple nodes in the node graph. This would help with everything from tidying up the node graph area to copying nodes from one shot to another. Such a simple thing that would make a big difference.
6. Option to add nodes to a node-tree rather than replacing them. When you right click on a still there’s the option to “add correction” which replaces the existing node structure of a shot with the node structure of the still (same options exist when you select “display node graph”). However it would be helpful to have the option of adding nodes from the still to the end of the existing node tree of a shot. For instance, you can have a still where the only node is a commonly used vignette or curve correction, when you finish balancing a shot you could add your vignette or curve with one click.
7. Ability to add correction to multiple shots at once. Don’t know if this option exists and I’ve overlooked it, but you should be able to highlight a bunch of shots in the timeline and “paste” a correction to all of them at the same time. For the record I don’t mean grouping shots which is a whole other beast in itself.
8. Ability to manipulate curves on x-axis. When working with curves, movement of the ends of the curve is limited to the y-axis only (moving the ends vertically). Can the x-axis become available (moving the ends horizontally)?
9. Ability to limit correction to a specific channel. Sometimes you’d like to effect only one color channel, for instance removing green cast from blonde hair by desaturating only green.
10. Using the Tangent Wave, have the GUI “match the control panel.” Using the Wave it would be helpful if when I choose “HSL Qualifier” or “Windows/Tracker,” the corresponding tab was selected in the GUI so that I could see readouts relating to my corrections. Right now, the way to do this is to go to “Master Menu A,” select “Primary/Offset,” select “Windows,” then go to “Master Menu A” again, and select “Windows/Tracker.” That’s unreasonable.
11. Ability to play slate info out of “video out.” In the format tab there’s an option to add superimposed info to the shots but from what I’ve seen this info only gets burned into exports out of Resolve. It would be awesome to have that info play out of the video out as well. (ie. TC burn-in for client screenings, watermark video out feed to DVD recorder, etc).
12. Ability to duplicate sessions within a project. There are times in a project when you would like to archive a version of your work in case future operations mess things up. For instance, before manually editing the timeline, before replacing vfx shots, before attempting an alternate grade on a scene, etc. For the record, duplicating the project using “save as” is not a good solution because it is messy and it creates more info for the database to track, and reimporting the EDL is not a good solution because the grades revert to the default version. Not to mention you shouldn’t have to jump through hoops for something like duplicating the timeline.
All this being said, I am very happy with Resolve. These are just a few suggestions that would streamline my workflow. I’m interested to hear what other users think about these points and what BMD people have to say about their possible implementation.
