  Finishing sequence in Resolve

  The only thing I’m not clear about is why the round trip workflow doesn’t seem to be more common. It seems most people play out their final sequence from Resolve rather than onlining it in their editing software after grading.

  I would have thought that the more usual thing would be to export sequence and edl/aaf from Final Cut or Avid, grade in Resolve, send back to FCP or Avid (with original handles) so the online can be done there. Otherwise if the sequence is graded in Resolve last of all any effects would have to have been baked in and then graded. So for example if there was white text in the offline cut and that baked clip was graded in Resolve then the white would not longer be white, or if there was a Boris effect in the original sequence it would now have a grade attached to it.

  Is this really the way it normally works?

  I think that in the end it depends on the tools you have.
  I work in a post production house and at home.

  At home, as I currently use Color, I need to do the mastering in Final Cut, so most of the titling is done after the color grading. This will change after I get Resolve.
  I think I’ll end up doing only the color grading in Resolve, then titling and subtitling in FCP when needed.

  At work, we use Iridas SpeedGrade for onlining, which can export a single master file or every clip separated, and can also mix clips with alpha channel. So we normally do the online in there.

  Version 8 which will be out in June will have a much better roundtrip workflow to/from FCP via XML with multi-track support. Same goes for Avid via AAF.

  From what I’ve seen, you’ll be able to import a multi-track XML from FCP into Resolve, do all your grading and then send back to FCP and do all your finishing there.

  And version 8 will be free to all Resolve owners.

  I believe Resolve 8 will also include an option to create an ALE file for Avid. Not sure how that will work. I guess we’ll find out in June!
