  • Poll… How many crashes per day?

Posted by Nat Jencks on March 31, 2011 at 9:11 pm

Hi, I’m slamming the list today, sorry!

Obviously there are a lot of factors involved in how often a system may crash, but I’m wondering what type of ballpark estimate is “normal”.

I’m working on a longform project, and we’ve crashed twice in the last few hours. Working from R3D material… Feature film, broken into reels.

Very simple grades so far, only primaries, no keys or power windows at all.

What should I expect as a baseline for how often the system may crash before I start assuming something is wrong?

    Thanks!

Only times I have crashes is when media files are corrupt, or when the Autosave kicks in just as I hit CMD+Q to quit. That makes Resolve freeze and the nice spinning ball (totally on LSD of course) shows up.
I let it run over night once to see if it could fix itself, but it kept spinning when I got back to work the day after. Only solution for that is to force it to die.

    Hi there Nat.
I work with 3 different setups: 1 is at home(specs in my signature), and 2 almost the same as at home, but with quadros 4000, none with Red debayering or Red Rocket.
Most of the work I do is TV shows, documentaries and concerts, from 45 to 90 minutes, uncompressed HD, avid dnxhd and pro res hq.
Sometimes the system gets sluggish when auto saving, but it never crashes.
Thats what most impressed me since I begin grading with resolve: it’s very stable.

    1. Decklink driver version should be latest. Up to 7.9.4 was unstable – I had video out freeze and then crash. Before 7.9.6 I had crash two-three times during the day. Especially after Fullres renders (my tv shows are mostly 4k red). With 7.9.6 no crashes for some days at all.

    2. Tracking window on a very long clip can cause crash. Do not know why. When track anything set softness to zero. When finished set it back.

    3. Working with 4k I set debayer to 1/4th for grading not more, when rendering set fullres premium and after rendering reboot the computer.

    4. Usually rebuild all the proxy movs by REDRushes or Clipfinder.

I have done a ton (spots with handles) this month, almost all Alexa (QT) Pro Res HQ some with 3D LUT, some not, with clients pounding me and me pounding the system, 12 nodes in some shots with 5 or 6 tracking windows and NO crashes – knock wood!
    Amazing!
Will say I’m pretty up tight about no other apps running – I’m one of the first AVID guys (20 years ago) and remember how only MC could run or sure death would occur!

crashes very rare on my machine, a few times when autosave got in the way of closing… I have not upgraded to the latest DL drivers but will do that. Grading 2K DPX frames without many problems.. Sometimes the Novation Automap Launchpad drivers seem to hang but i don’t think that is a Resolve issue…

I have about the same experience. Mostly it hangs on cmd + q.
    Feels really stable.

So I guess Im the only one having lots of crushes.
I had an 5D project converted to AppleProRes422 (HQ) and everytime while keyframing it crashed after a couple of frames, so I had so save it manually almost after every frame to be sure i dont loose any work.

It took me around 1.5h to keyframe a 5sec scene only because of the crashing, that was pretty annoying.

The people at Blackmagic told me to try it again but with DPX instead of APR422, but didnt have the time to do it yet.
But whit R3D I never had any big issues or crash so far, and I worked with lots of nodes.

    Cheers

Shockingly, Zero crashes after a month of solid use. Almost wasn’t gonna post this, feel like I’m minding myself.

    Gt20 + gtx 285. & decklink 3d.

Only wierd thing is if my USB dongle is plugged in at boot, resolve won’t start. I have boot without the dongle plugged in.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It seems like the behavior we’re seeing is outside the range of “normal” behavior, unless this is linked to working with large amounts of media, and R3D.

What are the experiences of people working on feature length projects with R3D material?

Do people generally keep separate sessions per reel, or have all your reels in a single session?

Also, are other people keeping ALL their source material in the project/media pool or just the shots required for the current cuts? Is there a stability/performance penalty for keeping ALL media in the pool?

    Thanks!

On all the grading systems I use Red is a pita withoe without Rocket and always do a conform to DPX .
Especially if I am planing to do secondary layered shots (boom corrections , inserts ) Red tends to crash the systems.
I think DaVinci is super stable in it’s own , but all sorts of media containers are tough to handle.
Try using Sapphires on them, almost impossible too
