  • Batch rendering multiple EDL based sessions & adding handles

Posted by Yann Heckmann on March 21, 2011 at 9:54 am

Hi, does anybody know of a way to easily add multiple EDL based sessions to the batch render queue?

As far as I can see, one can only add the current session to the render queue. This means I have to open the session, switch to the format tab, open the render window, add it to the queue, close the render window, open the next session … etc. This cumbersomeness partially defeats the purpose of a batch.

Also, I would all of these sessions to render out with handles without having to create a separate session with handles for each, but unfortunately the render window doesn’t provide an option for that.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you split and add from all your EDLs into the media pool?

If you split and add with say 150 frame handles from all your EDLs (select multiple edls after you choose split and add) then the master session will have all the shots required for all the above EDLs and with large handles, 150 frames gives you six second pre-roll so you can powermaster straight to tape.

If you need to render, render the master session that covers all your off-line EDLs in one render.
Use alt version for a different grade and commercial work flow on the render page to render alt versions

Thanks a lot, unfortunately our workflow – tons of EDLs pulling snippets from a large media pool – prohibits me from using the master session in this way.

Huh… Just thinking if there was a way to “source render” with handles from an EDL, in a way that would work with FCP, that would be amazing.

Currently If i get the EDL with a drive that has all the red media, if I want to reconnect in FCP to media managed project after a a render, I have to render the entirety of every single shot referenced in the EDL or just do a target render (or a combination of the two). In hires premium without a red rocket the former isn’t really realistic.
