Cubix Expansion Chassis noise
I finally received my Cubix GPU-Xpander 4 a few days ago and had time to get it up and running today. I’m really enjoying having all my cards back, along with two GTX285s and a RedRocket. But, I was a bit disappointed by how loud the fan and air movement is on the unit. Now it sounds like a large server room under my desk. Do any of you that have this unit experience the same? If its normal, then I’ll probably need to build a small cabinet for it. I know that placing it in a machine room is the preferred way, but that is not currently an option for my suite.

This is normal for now. I contacted the guys at cubix about it and they are looking into a way to make the unit quieter. They showed me that they had decibel meters and the engineering team was made aware. The noise is just about the level of a machine rooms hum.

yes not the most quite of devices. I wouldn’t say it sounds like the old G5s but its not quite either

Well I’m glad that its “what it is” and not an anomaly. Guess I’ll have to get out my tools and build a box for it. I’m not sure what the engineering team could do to lower the noise (quieter fan perhaps) as it seems pretty baked into the design.

slower fans. less speed. more heat pipes maybe ? there are a lot of options.
Temp controlled fans would also help a lot.

We noticed the noise issue when we received our Xpander also. Our hardware config is a bit different, with 2 Quadro 4000s + 1 RED Rocket + 1 PCIe host adapter for a Matrox MXO2 mini.
Initially, I connected a fan controller in series with the Cubix chassis fan, which allowed me to slow it down and reduce the noise (and airflow) significantly. I wasn’t too concerned about the Quadro cards, as they have external exhausting fan units. I was concerned that the RED Rocket card wouldn’t have enough airflow however.
I ended up simply cutting a hole in the wall (our Resolve suite is nextdoor to our datacenter), and running the Cubix host cable through it to connect to the MacPro.
If you have an adjacent room that would work, you might consider that option.

The guys at cubix sent out a new fan to me, I replaced it with the new fan and it is now the same volume as my HDpro. So it’s now good to be in the same room.
