  • Using a Canon Vixia HF21 with Blackmagic Intensity Pro

I am trying to bring in live feed from a Canon Vixia HF21’s mini HDMI port through a Blackmagic Intensity Pro to Wirecast. I am using a Mac Pro that sees the BM card just fine in wirecast, but the shot from the Vixia HF21 is blank. I did go in and turn on HDMI in the menu of the camcorder but that did not do the trick.

From reading blogs & forum posts here, at Telestream forums I see that people are using the Vixia HV40 with this setup and it’s working. Just not sure if it’s the camera (HF21) or something I missed. Sorry for cross posting this to the BM forum and here but it has to do with one or the other.

    Thanks!

[Dirk Pepperd] “From reading blogs & forum posts here, at Telestream forums I see that people are using the Vixia HV40”

You’re not reading in great detail then.
Actually the only reason to use the HV40 is for Firewire fallback.
All Canon Vixia’s are working. There are MANY mentions of other Vixia (and many other HDMI) cameras being used.

There’s something wrong with your setup but I have no way of knowing with the information provided.
All I can do is give you formulaic response as a result.

    Update Wirecast to 4.1.2
Update OS using Combo Updater (NOT software update) to 10.6.8 or 10.7.2
Update Blackmagic Intensity Pro drivers to 9.0
Check the camera in Blackmagic Media Express.
Kill ALL other programs that might use video or impact video in any way.
    Reboot the computer.
    Restart Wirecast.
Create a New User Admin account and delete all login items from that account and boot into that account and test.

The problem is somewhere in your system because Canon Vixia HDMI to Blackmagic Intensity Pro works in Wirecast and, in fact one can use multiple Intensity Pros and all the video sources will be recognized.

    Craig,

Thanks for heading me in the right direction. I did do a number of searches and didn’t find any that talked about using the Vixia HF21 with Blackmagic & Wirecast.

I followed everything you mentioned and got everything updated software wise. I only got the video to show up once after I built an administrator account and logged into it. As soon as I tried to do a capture it gave me the warning about dropped frames so I know I have problems with getting the right settings. I’m thinking it may be a good idea to look into an SSD hard drive.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dirk
