  Bleed lines in Illustrator

  I have been making labels for my employer for a little while now.
  The specs require a .125 bleed. I always just place them in manually with the guides. I wanted to try to set up the bleeds upon making the new document. So I put in .125 in the bleed options. However, the bleed box is out side of my art board. I don’t understand. The lines should be in my artwork so that I know how far I can put text and what not towards the edge of my label. So why do they show up out side of the board? Am I missing something?

  Hi, Camryn!

  A bleed is the part of artwork that runs off the edge of the printing area of a document before the document is trimmed down to size so Illustrator sets the bleed outside the artboard.You need to scale your artwork up to fit where the bleed lines are. When you go to print the artwork it will put marks where the corners of the artboard are for trimming. Bleeds are for printing so if you need to see where the edges of your artboard is while designing you will have to add guides.
