I have a vertically oriented file that I’ve rendered from AE that is 1920×3840. My client is asking to compress the file to mp4. Does mp4 support high dimensions?

None of the standard H.264 profile support an image that’s 3840px tall. You’d have to rotate it 90 degrees to encode as MP4.

I took the original file into QuickTime Pro, and was able to export to an MP4, retaining the original dimensions. Am I missing something?

You can do a bunch of stuff in Quicktime that is not supported in the official MP4 spec. Personally I wouldn’t use that.
