September 17, 2012 at 1:57 pmsorry for not getting back sooner. i was out of town.
the shadow isn’t really to hard.. it takes the right image… Start in PS. find the image you want and dodge and burn until you get the look you need… Also make sure the image is really big… i usually add a adjustment layer in photoshop… like hue/saturation. and I punch all the color out… then I add an adjustment layer of levels.. and crush it so there is no gray in the image. this should give you a really high contrast image with only black and white.
then I place this file in illustrator…. this is where i use live trace… play around with the settings. there are a ton of tutorials out there for this filter. once you are happy with it make sure to expand and clean up the mess that live trace makes.
as for the grunge. do something really similar but with a texture image. So the only difference is you are looking to isolate just the highlights of a grungy texture. Focus on finding something like a granite or sandstone texture.
again this is how i have done this before in the past. good luck.
