Is there a way of creative a single spline running through brush script, or any cursive, connected text that mimics handwriting? I don’t want an outline, but rather, one single line that runs through the middle of the text. It looks like it can be done with brush strokes.

Check the thread “Make a double path one path”

I’m not sure if this will do exactly what you want, but it’s a possible solution.

Or, you could draw a path with the pen tool.

The funny thing is, there are fonts that do this. They are usually used in CAD applications.

i’ve found a couple of different ones over here, but sadly, they won’t work correctly in Illustrator. Something to do with postscript fonts needing closed paths.

You could however use these fonts in a cad app (qcad is a decent free one) and import the lines into illustrator (where you can manipulate and stroke them to your hearts delight).

I can see your spot colours…
