  • is there a size limit for imported png images in illustrator cs4?

i’m trying to import a png file in illust. cs4, the file is somewhat big, but nothing outrageous, 22 x 9 in, 300 dpi. however when i try to put in illustrator it never appears on my artboard, nor my links palette, it’s just not imported. no warning, nothing. i have been able to import a smaller version, but unfortunately i need a large format file for printing purposes. any ideas?

    best,

    D.

    Nope. I can import a 22″x9″ @300 just fine.
Try to trash your preferences, see if it helps. Sometimes the prefs file can do all sorts of stupid screw ups.

Hi Les, thanks for your reply.

Is your large file also a png? I am able to import psd, jpgs and tif files with no trouble whatsoever, but when I bring in a png ( I need the background to be kept transparent) then I have issues. I also need to mention that the file is very complex, maybe too much to handle for Illustrator?

Well, I created 3 PNGS, all of them according to your spec(22″ x 9″ @300)

    1. Using File > Export (PNG). This does not allow to specify exporting alpha channels (grayed out).

    2. Using File > Save for Web. I saved the file as transparent 8bit PNG.

    3. Using File > Save for Web. I saved the file as transparent 24bit PNG.

In all cases illustrator imported the linked files without any problems.
