  illustrator files wont open

  I think i already know the answer to this question..Up Grade..but here goes anyway
  I have begun receiving files that i can not open due to the fact that the files were created in a newer version..Is there any way to get around this problem besides upgrading??

  Ask whoever is sending them to save them backward as an Illustrator Legacy file format.

  It is a big company that just gave me a web site to download from. I will see if i can contact the art department. Thanks
