  Opacity of edges

  Hi All

  I’m a bit of a photoshop noob and apologise if this has been posted before, but I can’t seem to find the answer as I’m not sure how to search for it.

  I want to know how to change the opacity of an edge so it becomes more transparent towards the edges. I’ve attached a pic of what Im trying to do – the white layer in the screen grab.

  Add a layer mask to the layer and paint on the mask (not the image) in black with a large soft-edged brush and it will go transparent. Layer masks are excellent for this purpose: you can also paint on the mask with white and get the image back — the layer remains editable without losing any image information. You can also blur the mask and do all kinds of other stuff with it.

  on mask layer you can use gradient tool and use black/white or black/transparant for a more even fade-in effect.
