  cropping without changing canvas size

  Is it possible to crop a photo without losing the canvas size? If so I love to know how.

  Absolutely!

  With the crop tool selected, at the options bar, there are inputs for height, width, resolution, and then a button marked ‘front image’. If you click that it will set your crop to be the size of the canvas upon cropping.
