  Smart Objects Memory Usage

  Quick question regarding smart objects.

  When placing a smart object in another document, does the memory usage of the layer performer similar to a layered group, or does photoshop temporarily rasterize the layer in order to free up memory?

  I have a large complex document I’m working on, and I’m wondering if a flattened rasterized layer will serve me better than using a linked smart object.

  Appreciate any insight on this.

  It really depends. If you need to come back to the smart group, then I wouldn’t, but if you won’t and you can live with it being rasterized, then do. I’m not exactly sure how ps deals with memory on a smart object, but it tends to keep nearly everything in memory when the file is open so a single rasterized layer will probably take up less memory than a similar smart object. That’s my guess.
