Hi folks, here’s an interesting tidbit I’ve run across that I’m rather confused about. I just built myself a new machine to run stuff like 64-bit PShop CS5 and whatnot, using Win7 64-bit. The machine isn’t exactly completed (still waiting for some additional memory and hard drives), but it is up and running for testing purposes.

So overall things seem fine and I decide to try a simple test to see how spunky the box cranks with 64-bit PShop, and I discover something weird. I open a relatively large file, 5182×5700 pixels CMYK with 18 layers, 9 alphas, and 4 paths. I choose the brush, pick a soft brush and max it to 2500 pixels. I run it diagonally across the image to see how well it’ll paint, and it staggers along in quite a clumsy manner.

Curious, I start up my older 32-bit Win XP machine and repeat the process on PShop CS3 and, although sluggish, seems smoother and faster. I decide to time the brush stroke complete time, and I get roughly 1.9 seconds to finish drawing on the 32-bit machine, and 2.1 seconds on the 64-bit box.

I then decide to open the 32-bit version of PShop on the WIN 7 machine and repeat the process and I get 1.5 seconds on the draw.

I’m at a loss as to what to think about this, considering the differences in the hardware and OS. Here’s a quick look at the two machines:

I don’t know about anyone else here, but that’s quite a difference in hardware to me, don’t you think? Granted, I realize I need to set the memory to dual channel, and the Win 7 box still needs a scratch disk, but you get the idea.

So I’m curious about what you folks here think about this little scenario. Thanks for your input.

I guess that left everyone just as perplexed as I am, LOL!
