  Selection/Modify/Contract problem

  Good day,
  I’m a newbie in Photoshop and after watching a tutorial video i tried it on. Somehow i got confuse because i cant follow the step because after i SELECT ALL the image/photo, i cant use the MODIFY/CONTRACT tool in the selection menu but i can be done so in the tutorial. The said tool is not highlighted and only the BORDER tool is available.
  Sorry to bother but it’ll be helpful if anyone could help.
  By the way its PS CS4 im using.

  I was experiencing this too, and found this work around;

  Select All > Select Modify > Border 1px > Select Inverse

  Then all the greyed out commands become available…
