  • Looking to dive deeper into Color Harmony

    Hi All,

I am a student looking to dive deeper into color theory. Specifically color harmony (how a specific combination of colors work together to create one of the crucial components that a design depends on).

I have worked on some complex projects in the past where I believe my choice of colors turned out very well, but I still feel it’s tough to make decisions and it’s the biggest subject I argue with myself about(it’s like multiple personality disorder kicking in!).

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

There are many different strategies for choosing colors that work well with each other. The Adobe Illustrator color guide palette actually uses many of the methods I used prior to the palette, and can actually take you into some never untravelled territory, so I suggest you investigate the Color Guide.

    Hi Nate,

    Check out Adobe’s “Kuler” at:

Be sure to click on the “Create” button on the left side.

Thanks for the useful info, it’s people like you who make this site worth revisiting for it’s helpful community!

It’s funny you mentioned that because I just saw some written information about that right after writing this post. I will look deeper into this for sure. By color guide, do you mean a written guide that comes with illustrator or is this accessed through illustrator itself? Let me know, I am very interested, thanks!

Actually the color guide is a a palette accessible in illustrator using window >> color guide. The interface takes some getting used to, but you can get some great results for choosing colors.

Thanks Art and Mike for the suggestions,

The color guide is very interesting. I was able to do some cool stuff with it so far. Very helpful, especially helps make life a bit easier when determining the color of text (in combination with other elements).

Kuler is pretty sweet and I will have to hop over to play with it some more!

Thanks a ton so far guys!

    Hi,

Just wanted to thank everyone for their comments!

I just bought an interesting book https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1585422193/ that looks like it dives into color harmony (pretty strongly from an illustrators viewpoint). Seemed worth it! I am looking into the complete color index as well, thanks John!
