layers flatten vs merge down
is there some advantage to using merge down as opposed to flatten when consolidating layers

Yes, if you only want to merge certain layers instead of the whole thing. Say, for instance, you created a dragonfly using multiple layers. You could “merge down” the layers that made up the wings of the dragonfly so that “wings” is one layer while “body”, “legs” etc. are on different layers.
