  direct selection tool no longer works

  I apologize if this is really basic, but in one composition the direct selection tool works on letters converted to outlines.

  but when I copy and paste the same letter into a different comp, the direct selection tool no longer works?

  Try view >> show edges

  Watch you appearance palette tell us what happens when you try to select. Can you delete the shapes?

  If this does not solve you problem, please elaborate in detail on what exactly is wrong.
