newbie question here-photgoshop creative suite.
THis is very basic( i realise this but i cant get my head around it) and thought that the quickest way would be to ask someone.I have an old colour school photo.What i want is to leave one figure coloured and the rest black and white .I can do it the other way round leaving the figure black and white and the rest coloured by isolating the figure by way of magnetic lassoo and then desaturating. .I know the opposite involves a simple layer/mask but if someone can explain it to me I would be greatly appreciated(we have all got to start somewhere!)

Hi,
1)Duplicate the layer.
2)Desaturate the new layer
3)Create a mask on the new layer
4)Click on the mask
5)Select the brush. Change the color to black.
6)Feather the brush (This hides the hard edges as you brush).
7)Brush on the object or person you want to color. Since the brush is black this will hide the black and white pixels on the new layer, which reveals the colored pixels on the bottom layer.

If you’re able to get a good selection with the magnetic lasso of the figure you’d like colored just “inverse” the selection (you’ll then have the rest of the picture selected) and then desaturate.

But, the layer mask gives you more flexibility to touch up. The editing is non-destructive when using a layer mask.
