***Right before posting the following problem, I had a flash, and it seems that it was the solution! Answer below. Just thought I’d post it anyway in case someone winds up having this problem in the future OR wants to add additional info. The board was even faster this time, just writing down here inspired me the answer, ahaha!***

Hi,

A new mystery for me…

I have a 22mb AE project with a fair amount of comps & video data (about 30gb) with my main one having 136 layers (with in general, a max of 3-4 one onto the other). In the last week, AE started to behave strangely. Normally I have a few programs opened, mp3 player, internet browser and such, and all is running fine. I can switch from one to the other, even have some do other tasks, all is cool. I sometime had to open Photoshop for adjusting images and then go back in AE, which again wasn’t a problem until now:

Photoshop just wouldn’t open when I clicked on its shortcut icon. Even adding the dreaded “warning” windows sound. Fine, I said. Closed down AE, and Photoshop would then be allowed to be opened.

I barely had time since then to add much stuff to my project, but understand that even when I’m having a “heavy” project, most often, I have only a few layers/comps at a time (over one another), with a few effects on them, nothing I never “really” tried before, nor done crazier effect pillups. Now the problem has escalated to the point where the project takes an eternity to just load. And when it does, it finalizes its opening with, again, the “warning” windows sound, and the frame in my comp is BLACK, that is until I move it up a frame and it goes back to normal.

Earlier on, I had the chance to work a little on my comp before it got worst, but now, every frame I touch, every layer I select, has becomes quite a heavy job and AE reacts by having HICKUPS, leaving the whole program on hold with its windows going to infoless/fully greyed, for a 2 second period and going back to normal. So as I as said, it’s now happening for every tiny little action I’m doing. As you can understand, this is not functional at all…

I tried:

-Fully reinstalling AE
-Defragging the disks
-Checking for disk errors
-Checking for viruses
-Switching my whole data to another drive
-Working a memtest (thus a short one)

And nothing has come out of this. All is okay…

There was another thread back in 2004 where cow users seem to have the very same problem. Only one solution was suggested. But I doubt it would work for me as it slowing down process begins before I even begin working on it.
Here’s the link https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?univpostid=717867&forumid=2&postid=718307&pview=t&archive=T

I’ll try another longer memtest overnight. Meanwhile, please HELP ME! So far, the cow community has always helped solve my problems with great patience and support, I have a perfect score and I’d love to keep it!

Thanks for your time and sorry for the long novel here,

Pat

******ANSWER: Seems that in the end, this time around, I REALLY had too much layers in one comp. Even though they were not all on one another, it seems that AE had a problem just having there lying around. I took a majority of them and COMPED them back into one, and voila, all is now running smoothly…! Take note that I wasn’t tipped off right away since I often had more the 150 layers at a time, but most of them were solids with TEXT for subtitles, as opposed to this time around, lots of video data shots (which was my edit pproj imported from Premiere Pro). Whether the weight of these shots makes a real difference or not in terms of having alot of layers and confusing AE, comping them back into a single unity solved this bug for me. Now I just hope this is not temporary and that my solution is valid!*******

ps: score kept!

hello
this problem seems to be very actual in my workflow right now. But i’m not shure it’s only about having too many layers. Of course it has something to do with the amount of Objects, but the reason is more a problem with RAM swapping. When I do a purge regulary (where is the damn shortcut for this action ?) Ican avoid serious problems. Even if it’s not very amusing to do so, it can be the workaround. To me it seems a Macintosh is not affected that much, than a PC. But I need the better OpenGL Performance on a PC, so I do not have the choice.

Maybe Adobe could do something, or it’s a Windows Problem mainly.
Or perhaps anybody knows how to finetune the pref-settings for RAM-usage or the secret settings.

Good luck
