  • Scaling two layer with one Null

Posted by Anthony Dupsta on August 1, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Can some one point me in the right direction, thank you.

I have two layers. I have both parented to a null.

When I scale the null I want both to scale but I want the second to scale at half the value. (*.5)

I can set independent keyframes. But I would like to control all my layers via one null. And each parallax layer has a smaller value as the master FG layer. Just Scale values.

    Thanks

I’m not a big expressions guy, but it seems the answer might be evading you due to it’s simplicity … is just scaling the layer down *.5 before parenting it to the null not working for some reason?

I am creating a stylistic parallax. So while my foreground is scaling by BG layer needs to have an exponential scale.

Thanks for the response. I hope that better explains my situation.

[Anthony Dupsta] “while my foreground is scaling by BG layer needs to have an exponential scale”

I guess I should’ve followed my first mind and stayed the heck out of the expressions forum. That said, it still seems that if a 50×50 pixel square and a 100×100 square are parented to the same null (after the first square has been scaled down from 100×100 to 50×50), then the null is scaled up, each of the squares will scale exponentially … just the first one will always be half the size of the second since it started out that way. Then again, perhaps I just don’t get it, which is fine too.

This essentially does the same thing as David’s suggestion, but you could just add this scale expression:

    value*.5

    Maybe I’m missing the point.

I was trying to mimic a 3D camera using a null instead with two layers and an expression, and avoid the 3d camera to get that fake parallax.

But I went ahead and set up a 3d scene. Now my FG layer scales with grand parallax and the BG layers have slight movement on them as I have pushed them back in Z. Walla fake Parallax.

Sorry for the confusion, I should have not tried to do it with an expression and nulls. Dooh
