Working on a project with a client I created a textured background and applied a radial ramp to it. After looking at the rough, the client asked if there was any way to “…make the light flicker…” I explained that the effect wasn’t actually a “light”, per se, but a gradient effect. I told her that I’m sure that there was a way to do it and I’d play around with it. Adding a light to the project wouldn’t be difficult, but it would definitely be “the long way” to alter the project; time isn’t really an issue, but in the interest of celerity I’m looking for a better way of creating the effect.

I was looking at Dan’s flicker/strobing light example, the one with the swinging lamp, and I was wondering if there would be anyway to express the end property of a ramp to get the same result.

Dare I mention that I’m simply not intelligent enough to cut through it and figure it out myself – I tried – and the results were. . .interesting, to say the least.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all the hard work!

Dare I ask, would a wiggle expression do the trick? That seems to be oversimplifying but it couldn’t hurt to try, right?

Nevermind. . .the wiggle expression worked just fine. 🙂

If your ramp layer is set to the Screen or Add mode then the easiest way to do this might be to wiggle() the opacity of the layer. Alternatively you could try linking the opacity of the layer and the distance between the ramp’s start & end properties.

    Thanks for the suggestion, Darby!

Here’s what I ended up doing: I have two layers, a radial ramp to simulate the fall off from a light source, and a texture. I have the texture above the ramp layer set to overlay. I added the wiggle expression to the end point of the ramp and played with the numbers until I got something that the client liked.
